Altman is currently engaged in discussions with various backers, including the government of the United Arab Emirates, to secure funding for an ambitious initiative aimed at enhancing global chip-building capabilities and advancing artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, as per a recent report by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

Citing sources familiar with the matter, the WSJ indicates that Altman envisions addressing the scarcity of AI chips utilized for training large language models (LLMs), potentially necessitating a fundraising effort ranging from $5 trillion to $7 trillion.

The report underscores the formidable challenge Altman faces: the targeted amount surpasses the current global semiconductor market, forecasted to reach $1 trillion by the decade's end. A $7 trillion fundraising endeavor would exceed typical corporate fundraising standards and even surpass the national debt of several major economies.

To contextualize, it would surpass the combined market capitalizations of Apple and Microsoft.

In a recent discussion with PYMNTS, Andy Hock, senior vice president of product and strategy at AI accelerator company Cerebras, highlighted the surging demand for generative AI tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT.

He emphasized how these tools have brought AI and cutting-edge deep learning into mainstream discourse, prompting interest from enterprise leaders.

Generative models like ChatGPT have applications across various sectors, from finance and law to healthcare and pharmaceutical research.

News of OpenAI's potential initiatives emerges amidst reports of the company's remarkable financial performance, with annualized revenue surpassing $2 billion late last year.

This achievement places OpenAI in the company of tech giants such as Google and Meta, cementing its status as one of the fastest-growing firms in history.
