Google recently rebranded its Bard chatbot to Gemini, which also involved launching mobile apps for both Android and iOS platforms.

While the app isn't officially accessible in India yet, there's a simple workaround to get it up and running swiftly.

The approximately 2MB 'app' appears more like a shortcut, essentially a part of the Google app that likely exists on your phone already. Once set up, Gemini can be invoked just like the old Assistant. Here's my experience with it.

A Distinctive Approach :

Google has taken a unique approach with Gemini, not entirely discarding Assistant but retaining it for tasks Gemini can't handle presently.

This contrasts with Microsoft's strategy, which boldly replaced Cortana with Copilot on Windows entirely.

However, this trust in Copilot might be misplaced. While AI chatbots can execute impressive tasks, they fundamentally rely on prediction models for text input, limiting their utility for tasks beyond text-based interactions.

Using Google's approach, habitual Assistant users will find the transition seamless. Both Assistant and Gemini responded swiftly when asked to set an alarm, offering similar confirmation messages.

There are subtle differences; for instance, when asked to open a document from Google Drive, Assistant promptly launched the Drive app while Gemini presented relevant documents within its interface.

User Experience :

Gemini seamlessly integrates with Google's suite of products, unlike Assistant. Once connected to Google Workspace, Gemini allows searching Gmail and Google Drive for specific topics.

During my tests, Gemini performed admirably, retrieving specific emails, reading today's news, and analyzing documents accurately. Its fact-checking feature ensures response accuracy, accessible via the Google "G" icon.

However, some tasks, such as controlling smart lights, still rely on Google Assistant, with Gemini acting as an intermediary.

Room for Improvement :

Despite its capabilities, Gemini has some areas for improvement. For instance, its image search feature isn't as robust; in one instance, it misinterpreted a landmark image as a person.

Moreover, Gemini tends to be slower than Assistant, with a delay in response times. Interactions also take longer due to the processing demands of generative AI.

Conclusion : Google recently rebranded its Bard chatbot to Gemini

Gemini presents a promising evolution of Google Assistant, combining its functionalities with chatbot capabilities. While slightly slower, its potential is evident, and Google's ongoing refinement could position Gemini as the voice assistant of the future.
